How does radiation work for a person?

Radiation causes people to have radiation sickness. If the dose of radiation is significant, a person dies within a few hours due to damage to the nervous system. Somewhat lower doses lead to death in about a week because of damage to the internal organs or the body's ability to counteract disease (immunodeficiency). Even lower doses are caused by cancer (including leukemia) and genetic disorders that occur in children whose parents have been irradiated.
